Why blur isn't redaction

Blur can leave clues.

Making text difficult to read is different from covering its pixels. The distinction matters when the value is short, familiar or easy to guess.

Blur

A made-up number, shown blurred.

Changes detail. Patterns may remain.

Solid cover

The same kind of value, replaced by a solid block.

Replaces pixels in the chosen area.

What blur changes.

Blur mixes neighboring pixels. Pixelation replaces small groups of pixels with larger blocks. Both reduce visual detail, but the result can still carry patterns from the original. A value that looks unreadable at a glance may still reveal useful clues.

Predictable text is a particular concern.

Numbers, short codes and familiar words have fewer possible answers than a long passage. Their length, spacing and remaining shapes can sometimes help someone infer what was covered. The surrounding text can provide clues too. This does not mean every blurred value can be recovered; it means blur should not be treated as proof that the value was removed.

A solid cover changes the image differently.

A solid cover replaces the pixels in the chosen area with one color. For that cover to be part of the copy you share, it must be written into the new image rather than left as an editable overlay. RedactRoom uses solid covers and builds a new file from the covered result.

A cover still leaves context.

A block's size can still show roughly how long the covered text was. Nearby labels, repeated occurrences, an avatar or the rest of a conversation can also help someone infer a detail. Covering one value does not make a document anonymous.

  • Look beyond the selected area.

Check adjacent labels, corners and repeated appearances of the same detail.

  • Inspect the copy you intend to send.

Open the exported file and check that the intended areas are covered and the useful context remains.

How RedactRoom handles it.

Choose a suggestion or add an area yourself. RedactRoom writes solid covers into a new image and reads the copy back to check the export. Detection can miss sensitive details, so your review still matters. Five free exports. Then US$14.99 once.
